Tis the season!

Last week Saturday Sinterklaas made a visit to our home bearing gifts for the very obedient children present.  We got together with all the Dutchies from around here who were in town and ate pepernoten and boterkoek while celebrating Sinterklaas.  Then we had a potluck barbeque together.  Fun times!

Last week we had a ladies Christmas luncheon at the MAF office.  We made some fancy sandwiches and drinks and the national ladies made some ethnic snacks.  We also had a gift exchange and I ended up with this cool beaded bracelet made in the style of the people who live in the bird’s head of the island.  We always have a good time together with these fun ladies!

Lately we’ve been seeing Santa Claus riding around town in the back of a pick-up truck.  There are always two ladies in white with him.  It took my a while to figure out that they are supposed to be angels.  (Their wings are really small…)  And also accompanying them are a bunch of “black Pieter’s”.  These guys are locals who’ve blackened their skin even more and wear traditional garb.  Quite funny to see!  Gonna try and get a photo…
