Back in January Rode celebrated her 10th birthday. She really wanted a party to celebrate entering into double digits. It was a traditional party which included a speech by the “MC”, Rode popping a balloon containing flour and a Bible text which she read to everyone, her mom making a moving little speech, and then Rode feeeding cake to the important people in her life. Those people included her best friend (who also sang a song to Rode in front of us all), her Aunt V, her Sunday school teacher, her mom and Brynne. After that everyone ate cake together, which is not the norm. Normally the people who the birthday person feeds gets a piece of cake and everyone else gets rice, egg/chicken, and veggies and of course, a goodie bag. Rode is growing up into a beautiful confident young girl. We are very proud of her and excited about her future. Especially as she goes to the Sekolah Papua Harapan.
Rode’s mom “R” has a job now at the Sekolah Papua Harapan. This is super exciting for her. She’s not teaching at the moment but assisting in administration as there was a great need there. She’s still in her three month probationary period but the word is that they are very thankful for her! Once things are a sure thing R will begin looking for a more permanent place to live. Half of her home was torn down a while back and what’s left is a wooden shack. (see the kitchen in the photo above)
