Each year in the middle of July we have the MAF Papua Family Conference. For the last I don’t know how many years, the conference has been held in a beautiful interior village where a super old conference centre is located. Due to unrest in that village this summer between two “churches” (I saw “churches” because only one group really is a church, the other is more politically motivated), it was decided that it would be prudent for us to remain in Sentani. The new hotel in town was booked and events were planned to be held at the International school campus where our children attend school. The hotel is just down the road from the School so you could walk between the two places although going to the school means going up a very steep road, in the humidity… The youth, ages 12 and up, stayed in the school dorms. That meant we just had Marc and Brynne with us!
Thankfully, the school has an air-conditioned multi-purpose room and it was put to good use. We had our meetings there and when there weren’t meetings, people could hang out, play games, or buy American candy from the snack shack. A team from New Heights Church in Vancouver, Washington, came as per usual and ran the VBS and youth programs while their pastor taught the grown-ups twice a day. We also had an afternoon at the local pool (located very near our home) and had the opportunity to make use of the pool at the hotel. We also had a fun ladies meeting including lots of different kinds of M and M’s and a book for each of us. On the final day the youth had a flour fight. As well, each night we had night meetings which began with fun games and the Conference Chicken throwing candy into the audience among other such hilarity (see photos)… All in all it was a great week of fellowship with our co-workers from across the island.
