Thankful…

A couple weeks ago we had the privilege of attending a thanksgiving celebration of some friends of ours.  E, the dad, works with Hugo.  E and his wife have one living daughter who is in Kindergarten.  When we lived here in 2003, Hugo attended the funeral of their first child who passed away after being very sick.  At that time E’s wife was expecting their second child.  This child also passed away due to an inoperable hole in her heart.  Unfortunately the medical system here is similar to the medical system of North America from the 1970’s.  This was excruciatingly hard on this couple.  Local beliefs say that they must have done something to cause the death of their children.  After much encouragement and prayer they had another daughter and this year they were blessed with another beautiful little girl.  The thanksgiving celebration was for the birth of this little girl, E’s 44th birthday and the birthday of their other daughter.  The celebration is kind of like a little church service.  There’s singing and a little sermon followed by eating a meal together.  We share in their joy and thankfulness for these blessings from God.
