Recently we had an MAF half day of prayer. The day started with a time of worship which included singing and prayer. Following that we ate lunch together. After lunch a group came and did an HIV/AIDS talk to our national workers. The talk is entitled “Semua Harus Tahu”. It means “everyone must know”. Each day in Wamena (a city interior where we have a base) 3-4 people die of HIV/AIDS. It’s a serious epidemic here in Papua.
Through the use of video, dramas (I even got to be in one!), and posters, they explained how the virus is transmitted and how it is not transmitted, how we should treat/love those who are infected and the two best ways to prevent it – pure before marriage and faithful while married. That day we also launched a new initiative wherein our aircraft will have laminated information sheets about HIV/AIDS in all the seat pockets. Each year we carry thousands of passengers and we hope that these info sheets will be read by all of them!
