Last month we took a family vacation to the interior city of Wamena.  It is one of the largest cities in the world that is supported purely by air.  There are no roads going from the coast all the way into the city.  Cars are flown in on a Hercules aircraft.  Every day there are multiple 737’s flying in bringing supplies.  The airstrip there is just long enough to handle an aircraft that size.  Wamena is also a key MAF base as from there they have access to many tiny mountainous villages who have no road access directly to the city.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Wamena.  We stayed on the MAF base and hung out with our colleagues who live there.  None of us was ready to go home by the end of our time there.
